Competent Department
The Regional Government Transport and Communications Department of applicant’s place of residence.
Conditions
The applicant must:
• Have his ordinary place of residence in Greece.
• Hold a valid driving licence issued by a EU Member State, including Greece, or by Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein.
• Not hold another driving licence of the same category, issued by Greece or another EU Member State (including Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein)
• Have reached the required age for each driving licence if the licence has been issued by another EU Member State apart from Greece or by any of the above three states.
Documents required
• Application – formal statement (this document)
• Photocopy of identity card or passport
• Valid driving licence (this document is required for the issuing of a copy in case of wear or damage)
• Two recent passport-type photographs (colour)
• A receipt from the National Bank of Greece for the payment of an amount of 30 euros the first time, and 60 euros the second, third, etc. time in case of loss or theft of the driving licence.
• A Public Revenue Office receipt for the payment of a fixed stamp duty and third party levies of 9.20 euros.
• Photocopy of a valid establishment or residence permit or other equivalent document, if applicant is not a Greek national, issued at least 185 days before the application or 95 days if applicant is a national of the EU or Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein and which will still be valid until the day of reception of the Greek driving licence.
• An official document from the public authority, which has issued the foreign driving licence, with its translation, containing all the information relating to the licence and its holder and attesting that the licence is not being held by any authority of the issuing state, as a result of a sanction. (This document shall be sent to the relevant Transport and Communications Department solely by correspondence through the Greek consulate in that country). This document is required if the licence that was lost, stolen, worn or damaged was issued by a EU Member State or by Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
• A translation of the foreign licence by the Foreign Ministry or a lawyer (This document is required if the licence that was lost, stolen, worn or damaged was issued by a EU Member State or by the states of Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
Procedure
• The application must be submitted to the Transport and Communications Department of applicant’s place of residence.
• If the applicant’s driving licence has been issued by a EU Member State or by Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, it shall be returned to the issuing country’s relevant authority by the competent. Transport and Communications Department.
• If the licence’s validity has expired, the new licence shall be delivered to the applicant following its renewal.
• Should the applicant hold another driving licence, issued by Greece or another EU Member State (including Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), this must be handed over so that a new licence incorporating all vehicle categories and subcategories that he/she is authorized to drive may be issued.
