Competent Department
The technical control of the different vehicle categories in Greece is performed by public and private VTCCs (Vehicle Technical Control Centers).
Public VTCCs perform technical control on all vehicle categories subject to such control.
Private VTCCs do not perform technical control on public passenger cars and trucks above 3.5 tons and buses.
Telephone Directory of Public VTCCs in TABLE 3.
General Information
1.Vehicles are brought in for control according to the call program of the relevant VTCC Department or Directorate for the Attica Region or in accordance with the date of issue of the first car licence in the case of new vehicles or in accordance with the next control date mentioned on the TCC.
2.The vehicle must be brought to the VTTC by its lawful owner or by a third authorized or non-authorized person.
3.The car owner must have located, before the control, the place where the chassis and engine number are marked on the vehicle. These numbers must be the same as those indicated on the car licence. If this is not the case, the owner must contact the relevant Regional Government Transport and Communications Department, before the VTCC control, in order to settle the matter. As regards, in particular, the engine number, replacement of the engine by another of the same type, is not considered as a change of engine. In that case, the engine type remains the same and it is only its production series number that will be different.
4.When the vehicle is brought to the VTCC, the interior and exterior must be clean, especially at the places where the chassis and engine numbers are marked.
5.If any of the allowed changes under provisions in force have been made to the vehicle’s main characteristics (cf. TABLE 2), its owner must legalize these through appropriate action at the relevant Regional Government Transport and Communications Department before the VTCC’s technical control.
6.If serious deficiencies are identified during control, the vehicle must be brought again to the VTCC within 20 days to be controlled again, once all the deficiencies, which were identified, are corrected by its owner.
7.In the event that dangerous deficiencies are identified during control, the vehicle’s licence and plates will be removed and the vehicle may be taken to a garage for repairs or to a parking area. The owner must, under his/her own responsibility, take the vehicle for repairs in a manner that is safe for road traffic. The vehicle will be brought again for control after undergoing repairs and once it has been established that it is suitable for driving and its licence and plates will be returned.
8.At the end of technical control and once the vehicle’s conformity has been established, the self-adhesive Special Technical Control Mark will be stuck on the vehicle’s posterior registration plate and its owner issued with:
a TTC (Technical Control Card) and
an ECC (Exhaust Control Card), if the vehicle’s owner does not have such a card.
Frequency of technical control
1.The first control for new public passenger cars and trucks (gross weight up to 3.5 tons) will be conducted within four (4) years (with a 1- week margin) following the issuing of the first licence, with the exception of the Attica region where this control will take place according to a Call Program announced by the Road Safety and Environment Directorate of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The next controls on these vehicles will be performed every two years (with a margin of three (3) weeks before or one (1) week after the date indicated on the Technical Control Card) with the exception of the Attica Region where controls will take place every three (3) years (with a margin of three (3) weeks before or one (1) week after the date indicated on the Technical Control Card).
2.The first control for new public passenger cars, buses, ambulance cars and trucks (gross weight higher than 3.5 tons) will be performed within one (1) year (with a 1- week margin) following the issuing of the first licence. The next controls for the above vehicles will take place each year with a margin of three (3) weeks before or one (1) week after the date indicated on the TCC).
Procedure
1.Periodical technical control is compulsory for the vehicles, which have obtained a licence from a region where a VTCC operates.
2.All vehicles driving without a Technical Control Card are subject to severe penalties.
3.Up to twenty days before the scheduled period for the control of their vehicle, citizens must call the VTCC (number 1525 for Public VTCCs in the Attica and Thessaloniki regions) to make an appointment.
4.On the appointed day and time they will bring their vehicle to the VTCC together with the required documents for control (cf. TABLE 1).
5.Only for Public VTCCs in the Attica Region and for all vehicle categories carrying a Technical Control Card, the next control will be performed without previous appointment at the same Public VTCC in the following two cases:
When the deadline has not been exceeded, i.e. for the period of three (3) weeks before and one (1) week after the date indicated on the TCC.
When the deadline has been exceeded by up to fifteen (15) calendar days.
However, when the deadline has been exceeded by more than fifteen (15) calendar days, an appointment will have to be made first by calling 1525.
Time required for issuing a Technical Control Card (TCC).
On the same day
Validity of Technical Control Card (TCC) without deficiencies or with minor deficiencies.
