International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail (RID)

Τhe European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) and the Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail (RID) are mainly technical documents, which are integrated into European Community Law as Directives. ADR and RID are adapted to scientific and technical progress every two years.

Till recently, the above-mentioned adaptation was conducted by issuing a different Directive for ADR and RID. In 2008, Directives 94/55/EC and 96/49/EC were replaced with a single Directive: Directive 2008/68/EC, which includes ADR and RID as annexes. The Directive 2008/68/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 September 2008, on the inland transport of dangerous goods, was integrated into Greek Law with the
joint ministerial decision 35043/2524/1.9.2010 (Official Gazette of the Hellenic Republic B’ 1385/02.09.2010)entitled “Adaptation of Greek Law to the provisions of Directive 2008/68/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 September 2008”.

Therefore, the Directives 94/55/EC, 96/49/EC, 96/35/EC and 2000/18/EC are repealed from 30 June 2009. The Decisions 2005/263/EC and 2005/180/EC are also repealed. Consequently, any relevant derivative European or Greek Law produced for the adaptation of the original Directives 94/55/EC and 96/49/EC to scientific and technical progress is abolished.

The Commission Decision 2011/26/EU of 14 January 2011 authorises Member States to adopt certain derogations pursuant to Directive 2008/68/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the inland transport of dangerous goods.

The Commission Directive 2010/61/EU of 2 September 2010 adapting for the first time the Annexes to Directive 2008/68/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the inland transport of dangerous goods to scientific and technical progress amended ADR and RID.This Directive has been integrated into Greek Law with thejoint ministerial decision 52167/4683 (ΦΕΚ Β’ 37/20.01.2012).
